What is Registered Massage Therapy (RMT)?

Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) is a regulated healthcare profession in Ontario. A Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is a highly trained professional who has completed extensive education and is registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO).

Unlike a relaxation massage you might find at a spa, therapeutic massage at Goreway Physiotherapy is a hands-on treatment focused on manipulating the body’s soft tissues, including muscles, connective tissues, tendons, and ligaments.

Our RMTs are trained to assess and treat physical dysfunction and pain. They use their in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology to develop a specific treatment plan tailored to your unique condition. The goal is to alleviate soft tissue discomfort, manage chronic conditions, and be an integral part of your overall rehabilitation plan.

The Goreway Advantage: An Integrated Approach to Healing

Why choose Goreway over other massage therapy clinics in Mississauga? The answer is our integrated, patient-first approach.

We are a complete rehabilitation centre, owned and operated by physiotherapists since 1990. This means your RMT works collaboratively with a team of healthcare experts, including physiotherapists, acupuncturists, and chiropractors all under one roof.

This team-based approach ensures we treat the root cause of your pain, not just the symptoms. For example, your physiotherapy might focus on strengthening a joint, while your massage therapy focuses on releasing the tight, compensatory muscles around it. This comprehensive strategy accelerates your healing, provides lasting results, and gets you back to your life faster.

Our Comprehensive Massage Therapy Services

Our Registered Massage Therapists are skilled in a wide variety of evidence-based techniques. After a thorough assessment, they will design a treatment plan using the methods best suited for your condition.

Deep Tissue Massage

This technique targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is highly effective for chronic aches and pain, stiff necks, upper back tension, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders. By using slow, deliberate strokes and deep finger pressure, the therapist can break down scar tissue and release persistent muscle “knots” or adhesions.

Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is the most well-known type of massage and is the foundation for many other techniques. It involves long, flowing strokes, kneading, and gentle tapping or circular motions. It is exceptional for promoting relaxation, reducing stress, improving blood circulation, and relieving general muscle tension.

Sports Massage

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a competitive athlete, sports massage can be a vital part of your training and recovery regimen. This technique can be applied pre-event to stimulate muscles or post-event to reduce soreness and normalize tissues. It focuses on preventing injuries, improving flexibility, and accelerating recovery from sports-related strains.

Trigger Point Therapy

A trigger point is a tight, sensitive “knot” within a muscle that can cause pain in that spot and also refer pain to other parts of the body (e.g., a trigger point in your neck causing a headache). Our therapists apply direct, focused pressure to these points to “deactivate” them, instantly releasing tension and alleviating the referred pain.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a gentle, hands-on technique that targets the fascia—the web of connective tissue that surrounds every muscle, bone, and organ in your body. Trauma, inflammation, or poor posture can cause the fascia to become tight and restricted. This therapy applies sustained, gentle pressure to release these restrictions, restoring Mobility and relieving pain.

Pre-Natal & Post-Natal Massage

Pregnancy brings beautiful changes, but it can also bring significant physical discomfort. Our therapists are specially trained to provide safe and effective massage for expectant mothers. Pre-natal massage helps to relieve back pain, reduce swelling in the legs, ease joint discomfort, and reduce stress. Post-natal massage aids in the recovery process after childbirth, helping to restore the body and manage the new physical stresses of motherhood.

Conditions We Treat: The Benefits of Massage Therapy

Our RMTs can provide significant relief for a wide range of conditions. The benefits extend far beyond simple relaxation.

  • Chronic Pain Relief: Effectively manages low back pain, arthritis, sciatica, and fibromyalgia.
  • Stress & Anxiety Reduction: Calms the nervous system, lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), and promotes deep relaxation.
  • Injury Rehabilitation: A key component in recovering from sprains, strains, and other soft tissue injuries.
  • Improved Circulation: Enhances blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues and helping remove metabolic waste.
  • Headache & Migraine Management: Releases tension in the neck, shoulders, and upper back that often contributes to tension headaches.
  • Reduced Muscle Spasms: Soothes and relaxes overworked or spasming muscles.
  • Increased Flexibility & Range of Motion: Loosens tight muscles and stiff joints, improving your overall Mobility.
  • Improved Posture: Addresses the muscular imbalances caused by prolonged sitting or repetitive motions.

What to Expect on Your First Visit

We want you to feel comfortable and confident from the moment you walk in. Here’s what your first visit to our Mississauga massage clinic will look like:

  1. Welcome & Intake: You’ll be greeted by our friendly staff and asked to fill out a confidential health history form. This helps your RMT understand any pre-existing conditions or areas of concern.
  2. Private Assessment: Your RMT will bring you to a private treatment room to discuss your goals, pain points, and health history in detail. They may perform a few simple physical assessments to check your range of motion or identify trigger points.
  3. Your Customized Treatment: Your therapist will explain the treatment plan and ask for your consent. They will then leave the room, allowing you to undress to your comfort level and cover yourself with a sheet on the comfortable, padded massage table. Your privacy and comfort are our top priorities at all times.
  4. Post-Treatment Plan: After your massage (available in 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions), your therapist will provide you with feedback, self-care advice, and recommended stretches or strengthening exercises to enhance the benefits of your treatment.
