Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specialized form of the therapy intended to alleviate both the primary and secondary problems due to vestibular disorders. It is an exercise based program primarily designed to reduce vertigo and dizziness, reduce gaze instability, and /or reduce imbalance and fall risk as well as address any secondary impairments that are a consequence of the vestibular disorder.
Vestibular Rehabilitation therapy is an emerging field within physiotherapy, utilizing manual therapy and patient centered exercises to reposition the crystals within the inner ear and re-training the brain to better process the signals from the inner ear and nervous system.
Conditions Can Be Treated Such As
- Vertigo (BPPV)
- Poor Gaze Stability
- Unsteadiness/ Imbalance
- Meniere’s Disease
- Vestibular Neuritis
At Goreway Physiotherapy initial visit begins with a comprehensive assessment that should include collecting a detailed history of the symptoms and how these symptoms affect daily activities. The therapist will screen the visual and vestibular systems with various tests that observe how well eye movements and balance are being controlled by these systems.
A customized exercise plan is developed from the findings of the clinical assessment. Treatment will involve manual therapy of the neck / head, education and home exercises.
Vestibular Physiotherapy is carried out by a Registered Physiotherapist, if you have extended health coverage for physiotherapy you will be covered and if you are a senior 65 & above will be covered by OHIP at our facility.
